Research Positions Available (M/F)

Soundscaping for SmartCables

Applications are invited for two research positions that will become available during the second semester of 2021 in the Signal Processing Laboratory (SiPLAB) at CINTAL, University of Algarve, Faro, Portugal, under the MIT-Portugal FCT program funded project “Knowledge and Data from Deep Space” (K2D). SiPLAB is a leading university laboratory in underwater acoustic signal processing and ocean noise, including prototype equipment development, source localization, sonar, model-based inversion algorithms, and underwater communications (more at www.siplab.fct.ualg.pt). The successful candidate will develop research in the scope of the K2D project, whose main objective is to make feasible the usage of telecommunications submarine cables for ocean observation and monitoring. The project will cover aspects ranging from developing and testing sensing equipment, through algorithms for online data analysis, control, communications and localization as well as, environmental monitoring and ocean soundscaping using acoustic sensors installed along the cable. Particular application is sought for the CAM-ring cable between Portugal, Azores and Madeira islands to be replaced in the coming years. Applicants must hold a Master or PhD degree in engineering, applied mathematics or physics. He/she should be fluent in written and spoken English, demonstrate good interpersonal communication and individual absorptive capacity skills. Mandatory qualifications: experience with ocean acoustic data models and programming skills. Desirable qualifications: experience in ocean acoustic propagation modeling and/or experience in acoustic equipment deployment and testing at sea. The successful applicant will be given an initial six month duration contract, renewable every six month (negotiable), up to the end of the 3 year duration project. The monthly net allowance will be negotiable according to the experience of the candidate, but will include social security coverage and work accident insurance.
